I was very excited when I heard the Elemental Evil Player’s Companion included new races, including the genasi, a long-time favorite. I admit I was more than a bit disappointed with the “official” result. Regardless, I am still playing an air genasi at the moment. After giving warforged a once over a couple posts ago, I thought I would give genasi the same treatment. Here goes…
(As with all the genasi, I went back and read the genie entry in the Monster Manual to look at some basic traits and abilities, then translating that into the subrace.)
Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution score increases by 1. (This is instead of a 2 point increase. Genasi are much better defined by their subrace, just as genies are defined their specific race.)
Size. Your size is Medium.
Darkvision. (All genies have darkvision, this would seem a pretty standard trait.)
Languages. Common and Primordial.
Subraces. (See below.)
Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity score increases by 2.
Unending Breath. (This ability does not exist with djinn, but it is more of a “ribbon” and builds flavor. It is a holdover from previous edition air genasi.)
Lightning Resistance. You have resistance to lightning damage. (Djinn are immune to both lightning and thunder damage.)
Mingle with the Wind. (There are several good choices here, including levitate, feather fall, or even gust. Using tiefling as an example a balanced design, a weaker spell like feather fall is probably more appropriate.)
Ability Score Increase. Your Strength score increases by 2. (I did not want this to be yet another strong and hardy “not orc”.)
Heart of Stone. You have advantage on saving throws against being petrified. (Dao are immune to being petrified. Medusas beware.)
Earth Walk. (This is a better representation of the dao’s earth glide ability instead of merge with stone, which I removed. This is also a reasonably useful trait.)
Shifting Sands. You know the mold earth cantrip. (Dao have lots of spellcasting abilities that are related to earth and stone, it fit thematically and is not overpowered.)
(The fire genasi feels a bit too simple, but it fits well with an efreeti descendent. The produce flame cantrip is a great representation of the efreeti hurl flame attack. My fear would be its close similarity to tiefling. No changes except those listed below.)
Ability Score Increase. Your Intelligence score increases by 2.
(Again, the water genasi fits pretty well, though the marid only has resistance to acid damage itself. I was tempted to remove the shape water cantrip, but I do not see the harm in leaving it as is for now. No changes except those listed below.)
Ability Score Increase. Your Wisdom score increases by 2.
There you have it, my fixes for the genasi race!
But… what do I know…?
