Hacks | Mystic

Last month’s Unearthed Arcana gave us a look at psionics. I like it. Granted, I am generally inclined to like psionics in general, but this treatment of the rules does not make mental powers a subset of magic and spells. That is a very good thing.

However, there are a few things that need to be addressed. First is the mind thrust ability. Why create a brand new mechanic for the attack when a saving throws is perfectly suited? This seems like an unnecessary complication in order to make something feel unique–a complete one-off from the rest of the game mechanics (and never to be used again). Second is ethereal weapon ability. I feel this needs to be an attack roll (especially since the psionic weapon discipline gives the character a +1 weapon) with a critical on a hit and half damage on a miss.

I am looking forward to see a level 1 to 20 treatment of the mystic, as well as the other Orders and disciplines. Hopefully the survey and feedback will change what I mentioned…
