The Underdark is a subterranean wonderland, a vast and twisted labyrinth where fear reigns. It is the home of horrific monsters that have never seen the light of day. It is here that the dark elf Gromph Baenre, Archmage of Menzoberranzan, casts a foul spell meant to ignite a magical energy that suffuses the Underdark and tears open portals to the demonic Abyss. What steps through surprises even him, and from that moment on, the insanity that pervades the Underdark escalates and threatens to shake the Forgotten Realms to its foundations. Stop the madness before it consumes you!
Waking up, face down on a cool stone floor, is a shocking contrast to shining daylight from days ago. Each person in the drow prison cell looked at each other warily, but everyone knew that there were few fates worse than being slaves to for the dark elves.
The cell contained a menagerie of characters, a display of Underdark races. A few of them stood out, whether being more competent or more charismatic. As the prisoners eventually learned, they were in Velkynvelve, a drow outpost attached to Menzoberranzan. They were to be shipped off to the City of Spiders, but the caravan was late.
Their drow taskmasters and quaggoth guards were both cruel and creative in their use of the slave labor, often making them repeat tasks and whipping them often for no better reason than boredom. As the days turned longer, the palpable tension and annoyance hanging over the outpost deepened.
A badly scarred drow warrior offered the prisoners a way out, if they were willing to take it. When an unexpected aerial battle between demons interrupted the cavern, the prison door was unlocked and the prisoners–led by Dareth, Draekhill, Cormyn, and Omarius–took the initiative and overpowered a guard post. Arming themselves in drow gear, they jumped off the waterfall into the lake far below.
Unprovisioned and unprepared, they made their way into the Underdark…
This was the opening scenario for Out of the Abyss played during Extra Life 2015. I only intended it as a one-shot, but now I am going back to fill in some of the story before session 1, in case anyone wants to read it in order. Stay tuned…
