Ravenloft and Rumors

While I never intended for @Visionary to be a news site like EN World, I have to admit I saw some interesting news yesterday and a follow-up article today, and I wanted to comment on it. The long rumored Ravenloft release will be the next D&D module and will feature Strahd. I have heard several hints to that effect for the past few months. The big launch will be at Winter Fantasy in a few weeks with the introduction of season 4 of the D&D Adventurers League.

The one thing that has me scratching my head is this (you can also search for Ravenloft with similar results). I assume this is where all the news came from. Did Wizards really forget to take out two Saturday media posts revealing information about a future release and perhaps spoil the grand reveal? The links on the page do not go anywhere, so take that with a grain of salt.

I am very happy for this development (if it is true), but not specifically pertaining to me. I believe Ravenloft will bring back or rejuvenate many players and we will get a whole new generation of stories. As Chris Perkins mentioned at GameHole Con back in November, that is the whole goal of using these older assets to create a new shared experience. That can only be good for D&D. However, it does mean I will need to sit through more “back in my day” stories or more gamer nostalgia. I was never a fan of Ravenloft and I only picked up a few novels because Lord Soth got stuck there for a while.

Regardless, I am excited for the next release from D&D… maybe some of the old Dungeon Masters will return now that they can take us back to the Demiplane of Dread…

But… what do I know…?
